Riding in the Golf Cart

After having to cancel our Memorial Day weekend plans for a “hurricane” (that NEVER hit us) we decided we would try out a local campground, Spirit of the Suwannee in Live Oak, Florida. We left on a Friday after work and the drive was only about 45 minutes. There isn’t a lot of information on the website about each site and I was nervous about the site we had selected based on the website. My gut was right and our site was terrible! The campground was pretty much empty and we selected a small site, angled down (into a lake) and there was group of folks who were camping together all around us. I’m always up for neighbors but decided to try our luck at a different site. The camp manager at the front was super chill and pretty much told us we could have an entire block to ourselves, so we did just that!

We noticed that we are getting fairly quick at set up and within 30 minutes we were enjoying camping. Not saying I don’t miss the pop-up, but our new camper definitely has advantages! This campground is so unique and EVERYONE drives a golf cart. Like EVERYONE. That night we hung out and played cards and started a fire. This was our first private campground so we were a little shocked when you could just build a fire on the ground and not get in trouble for not having a fire ring. It was almost like we were real campers (haha).

Lake Area, Site #312

That morning we decided THAT’S IT! We are renting a golf cart for the day. I am so glad we did. It wasn’t cheap – for about $50 – you can rent it for 24 hours, but we decided after about an hour it was totally worth it. The coolest part about the Spirit of the Suwannee is that they have golf cart trails. Not paved paths, not roads, TRAILS THROUGH THE WOODS. After finding the first trail, I knew we were doomed for the day. Rick absolutely went crazy and even got us lost quite a few times. Although we enjoyed the golf cart, Lucy loved it even more. She sat between us, calm as could be, with a big smile taking in the view as we dodged trees and jumped the golf cart.

A word to the wise if you do rent a golf cart – make sure to CHARGE it. We barely made it back from one of our adventures out in the middle of the woods because we were to busy having fun and ran the battery a little low. Oops! While it was charging Rick decided to spruce up the golf car a bit and add an Eagles flag (GO BIRDS!). We even ran into some friends who we didn’t know were camping there!

Lucy’s golf cart – GO BIRDS!!

We usually check out first thing in the morning, but we stayed as late as we could because we wanted to keep driving the golf cart. We woke up early Sunday, blasted some good Worship music and continued to drive around the park. We really enjoyed out quick weekend trip to Spirit of the Suwannee! I heard negative reviews due to music festivals, but we REALLY loved it here. Maybe we’ll have to try the festivals next time!
